Seven years after the Murray Baker Bridge opened, the whole of downtown Peoria had undergone something of a renaissance. Or at least, a great deal more money had been invested in it that in the previous decades. Boosters still credited the bridge with  sparking downtown’s move away from its seedier past as well as cementing Peoria as the economic center of Central Illinois.
